What Is Bocce Ball?

Bocce ball is one of the world's oldest and most beloved outdoor games — and one of the easiest to pick up. Whether you're playing on a sandy beach, a grassy backyard, or a dedicated bocce court, the goal is simple: get your bocce balls as close as possible to the small target ball called the pallina.

What You Need to Play

• A bocce set — typically 8 large bocce balls (4 per team) and 1 pallina
• A flat playing surface (grass, sand, gravel, or a bocce court)
• 2–8 players, split into two teams

Basic Setup

1. Divide players into two teams of 1–4 players each.
2. Decide which team goes first (coin flip or rock-paper-scissors).
3. The starting team throws the pallina at least 10 feet away to establish the target.
4. The same player then throws their first bocce ball, trying to land it as close to the pallina as possible.

How to Play: Turn by Turn

After the first throw, the opposing team throws their bocce balls — one at a time — until they either get closer to the pallina than the first team, or run out of balls. Then the first team throws again. This continues until all balls have been thrown.

Key rule: Only the team that is not closest to the pallina throws next. The team that is already winning waits.

Throwing Techniques

• Punto (pointing): A gentle underhand toss aimed at landing near the pallina.
• Raffa (hitting): A faster throw aimed at knocking an opponent's ball away.
• Volo (flying): A high-arc throw that lands directly on target — advanced technique.

Scoring

At the end of each round (frame), only one team scores. The team with the ball closest to the pallina earns one point for each of their balls that is closer than the opponent's nearest ball. Games are typically played to 12 points.

• Use an underhand swing for better control.
• Aim for consistency — landing near the pallina is more reliable than trying to knock opponents away.
• Play on a flat surface to start; uneven terrain adds challenge.
