If you're shopping for a bocce set or just getting into the game, you've probably noticed that bocce sets come with balls of two very different sizes. Here's what you need to know about each one — and why size matters more than you might think.
The Pallina: The Small Target Ball
The pallina (also called the jack, boccino, or target ball) is the small ball that players aim for. It's typically:
- Diameter: 40–60 mm (about 1.5–2.4 inches)
- Weight: Very light — usually 60–120 grams
- Color: White or a contrasting color to stand out on the playing surface
The pallina is thrown first to set the target for each frame. Its small size makes it easy to toss but tricky to get close to — that's the whole challenge!
Bocce Balls: The Main Playing Balls
Each bocce set includes 8 large bocce balls — 4 per team, usually in two contrasting colors. Standard sizes vary by play level:

Yes — significantly. Larger, heavier balls are more stable on uneven terrain and better for strategic shots like the raffa (hitting an opponent's ball). Smaller recreational balls are lighter and easier for kids and casual players to handle.
For competitive play, the United States Bocce Federation (USBF) and international bodies specify 107 mm balls. If you're playing in tournaments, make sure your set is regulation size.
Material Matters Too
- Resin/Composite: Most recreational sets. Cheap, affordable, and available in many colors.
- Metal (stainless steel or chrome): Used in pétanque-style play; heavier and more precise.
